Attention students at the BS, MS, and PhD levels! The Bioengineering Division of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers cordially invites your abstract submissions to the Student Paper Competition of the ASME 2008 Summer Bioengineering Conference.

This competition is divided into multiple levels (BS, MS, Doctoral*) and technical areas to provide for a fair evaluation of student work. The precise technical areas used to divide the papers for judging will be determined based on the abstracts submitted in order to allow for a reasonable distribution of entries. BS, MS, and Doctoral competitions will involve a poster-based presentation of the research results during a dedicated poster session. The top 6 papers in each Doctoral-level technical area will be presented in a highlighted podium session in place of the poster session. For each level, submitted papers will be reviewed, by a panel of experts, in a two-step process: Detailed review of abstracts based on structure, composition, and technical merit. (Note: Abstracts judged to be unsuitable for acceptance into the conference will not be considered for the regular program.) On-site judging of poster or podium presentation based on presentation and technical merit. Note: For the PhD poster competition, the top 10 papers in each Doctoral-level technical area will be judged on-site for presentation. Students who enter the competition must meet the following criteria: The student, listed as lead author, was the primary researcher on the project. The project was conducted while this student was enrolled at the level indicated in the competition.** The student will be able to present the paper, in either poster or oral format, at SBC2008. (Guidelines for poster and podium presentations will be the same as the standard technical sessions.) The student will submit only one paper as presenting author to the Student Paper Competition. Work submitted and planned for presentation is not being submitted to any other session at SBC2008. Work submitted and planned for presentation cannot have been published in a peer-reviewed format at the time of submission. The deadline for submission to the Student Paper Competition is January 31, 2008. Abstracts must meet the standard guidelines for an official two-page SBC abstract. (Follow the abstract preparation and submission instructions which will be announced the SBC2008 web page.) As is true for all conference submissions, abstracts will only be considered for presentation if they include research results and not simply a description of what will be studied. *Doctoral students may be pursuing a PhD, MD, or equivalent terminal degree. **Students may have graduated before presenting their research, but the research must have been completed during their enrollment as student at the designated level.
