 The 2006 Summer Bioengineering Conference

The Bioengineering Division of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) will hold the 2006 Summer Bioengineering Conference on June 21-25, 2006 at the beautiful Amelia Island Plantation, Amelia Island, Florida. Since 1993, the Summer Bioengineering Conference has been a forum for informal interactions and exchange of ideas among new and experienced members of the bioengineering community. In a uniquely relaxed atmosphere, the Conference provides an outstanding venue for researchers, educators and students, bioengineers, biologists and clinicians – from industry, academia and clinical organizations - for state-of-the-art and in depth discussions.

Endorsement and Recognition

With such reputation, the conference was able to attract speakers like Nobel Laureate Dr. Steven Chu, Drs. Craig Benham and Ray Keller, Boston Scientific’s John Abele and Dr. Firouz Naderi of the Mars Exploration project. It is endorsed by the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES), IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology (IEEE/EMBS), and the United States National Committee on Biomechanics (USNCB) and became a prominent professional event and a magnet to the best talents and prospects in bioengineering.

Attendance: Bioengineering leaders; Record Numbers

A record of over 800 people attended last year’s conference in Vail, Colorado. Nearly every
university in the US now boasts degree programs in biomedical engineering or bioengineering. About half of the attendees were students – undergraduate seniors, masters and doctoral students – presenting their research and projects and launching professional or research careers. About a quarter of the participants were both young and established researchers – from clinical and from academic institutions; many of whom head robust research programs – contributing expertise and experience to the discussions. Representatives of industry and other private research, manufacturing and support services organizations complete the attendee list. The 2006 Summer Bioengineering Conference is projected to set a new attendance record of 1,000 participants.

Presenting Cutting-Edge-Research, Discovery and Innovation

The program is focused around four research stems: cell and tissue engineering, fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer in biotechnology and solid mechanics. Under these umbrellas are sessions titled Cell Adhesion and Molecular Interactions, Mechanobiology of Stem Cells, Biomechanics of Endovascular Grafts, Left Ventricular Assist Devices, Biophysical Phenomenon in Cell, Preservation, Viscoelasticity of Soft Tissue, Clinical Applications of Computational Mechanics and many others. The final program is currently being revised and assembled.

The 2006 Summer Bioengineering Conference is:

  • A prominent professional event; a magnet for leading speakers, academicians and industry;
  • A forum for informal interactions and exchange of ideas among members of the bioengineering community;
  • A unique setting accommodating for graduate and undergraduate students, industry
  • representatives and both new and experienced researchers;

The conference provides an opportunity for the professionals in the following areas to connect with
leaders in the biomedical engineering and bioengineering arena:

  • Scientific vendors seeking exposure to state-of-the-art research
  • Publishers seeking cutting-edge content
  • Law offices and consulting agencies interacting with the FDA
  • Law offices and consulting agencies dealing with intellectual property
  • Placement agencies
  • Economic and business development organization
  • Design and technology development houses

The conference is also an excellent opportunity to demonstrate support and commitment to
biomedical and bioengineering research in our universities.
