Who's In Environmental Engineering
2008:
AAEE Board
of Trustee Appointment
ASME through it s Environmental Engineering
Division announces the appointment of Richard S. Magee,
Sc.D., as ASME’s Sponsoring Organization Trustee to
the Board of Trustees of the American Academy of Environmental
Engineers, Dr. Magee’s three-year tem begins January
1, 2009. The Academy was founded in 1956 for the principal
purpose of serving the public by improving the practice
of elevating the standards, and advancing public recognition
of environmental engineering through a program of specialty
certification of qualified engineers. The duties of Academy
Trustees include attending Annual and special Board Meetings,
serving on various committees, promoting Academy activities,
encouraging AAEE specialty certification, and reporting
on activities for and on behalf of the Academy. In addition,
Sponsoring Organization Trustees are to communicate respective
activities of the Academy and environmental activities of
ASME. A BoT Trustee may serve two successive three-year
terms.
Dr. Magee received his BS, MS, and
ScD degrees in Mechanical Engineering at Stevens Institute
of Technology. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in
New Jersey and Board Certified Environmental Engineer with
a specialty in Hazardous Waste. Presently he is a Research
Professor at Stevens, Technical Director, New Jersey Corporation
for Advanced Technology, a not-for profit public/private
partnership designed to develop, verify and commercialize
emerging, innovative environmental and energy technologies,
and maintains an active engineering consulting practice.
Dr. Magee is an ASME Fellow, and has served as Vice-Chairman
of the ASME Research Committee on Energy, Environment and
Waste and as Chairman of the ASME Waste Incinerator Operator
Certification Committee’s testing committee.
Dr. Magee replaces Robert E. Sommerlad,
who has served two terms on the BoT; his current term ends
in December 31, 2008. Mr. Sommerlad received his BS and
MS in ME from the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He
is a licensed Professional Engineer in New Jersey and Board
Certified Environmental Engineer with a specialty in Air
Pollution. Presently he has a consulting engineering business.
His career has focused on the power generation industry
in various roles from development engineer to senior management,
including Vice President, President, and BOD roles. He is
an internationally recognized expert in the air pollution
control, waste management, and energy fields. Mr. Sommerlad
is an ASME Life Fellow, and has served on many research
and division committees.
During Mr. Sommerlad’s tenure
on the BoT the Academy made significant strides in its structure,
and organization. One of the most significant advancements
was the admission of environmental engineers who are not
Professional Engineers. Thus, many non-PE engineers working
in the environmental arena may now be certified by the Academy.
Previous ASME BoT Trustees include Walter R. Niessen, Charles
O. Velzy, and Herbert I. Hollander.
