Dr. Ping Cheng is presently Chair Professor of School of Mechanical & Power Engineering, and Director of Institute of Engineering Thermophysics at Shanghai Jiaotong University. He obtained his B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Oklahoma State University in 1958, his M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1960, and his Ph.D. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Stanford University in 1965.  He joined the University of Hawaii as Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering in 1970, was promoted to the rank of Professor in 1974, and served as Department Chair from 1989 to 1994.

He was appointed as the Head of Mechanical Engineering Department at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology from 1995 – 2002.   He was a visiting professor at Stanford University 1976-1977.  Visiting Professor of Thermodynamics at the Technical University of Munich in 1984, Visiting Professor at University of Paris VI in 1999 and visiting Professor of  Mechanical and Production Engineering  at Nanyang Technological University 2002.  He also holds honorary professorships or consulting professorships in nine other major universities in China.

Professor Cheng has been active in research work in porous-media heat transfer (with applications to geothermal energy recovery and heat pipes), radiative gasdynamics ( with applications to re-entry of space vehicles), heat transfer in compressible viscous oscillating flow (with applications to cryocoolers) and transport phenomena in Microsystems (with applications to microelectronic cooling and micro fuel cells). He has more than 200 publications including 160 SCI journal papers with over 2,800 SCI citations.

He received the 1996 ASME Heat Transfer Memorial Award in Science given by American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the 2003 AIAA Thermophysics Award given by American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.  He is an ASME Fellow, and an Academician of Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Science.

He is presently serving as an Editor or International J. of Heat & Mass Transfer, an Editor of International Communications in Heat & Mass Transfer, and has been serving as an Associate Editor of AIAA Journal of Thermophysics and Heat Transfer for the past 18 years. . He is on the editorial boards of eight other international heat transfer and energy journals: Numerical Heat Transfer, Experimental Heat Transfer, Journal of Porous Media, International Journal of Thermal Sciences (Revue Generale de Thermique), Journal Acta Mechanica, Advances in Fuel Cells, Journal of Green Energy, and Chinese Journal of Thermal Science and Technology.
