Graduate student awards.

Graduate Student Fellowship

Purpose: To encourage technical research related to the field of information storage and processing systems, among Mechanical Engineering graduate students across the world.

Term: The ISPS graduate student fellowship will be awarded once each calendar year.

Award: The graduate fellowship consists of a monetary award of $1500 and free registration for the annual ISPS Conference in the year the award is granted.

Eligibility:
  • Mechanical Engineering graduate students, pursuing thesis based research in areas of interest to the information storage and processing systems.
  • The student should not have defended his/her thesis by the time that the fellowship is awarded.
  • A graduate student is eligible to receive this award only once during his/her career.

Procedure: Interested students need to submit an application packet by March 31st of each year to the chair of the awards committee. The application packet should contain:

  1. A statement of interest outlining the student’s goals in pursuing research in the field of information storage and processing systems.
  2. A statement summarizing the key research achievements of the student in the field of information storage and processing systems.
  3. Three letters of support from faculty members at the student’s institution or from industry collaborators.
  4. Copies of relevant conference and journal papers.

Selection criteria: The Awards Committee of the ISPS Division will decide the winner of the fellowship. The decision will be based on the following criteria:
  • Conduct research in the area of information storage and processing systems.
  • Demonstrate/promise significant theoretical/applied achievements in graduate research in the areas of interest of the division.
  • Support letters from faculty and/or industry.

Award notification and presentation:
  • The winner of the fellowship will be notified of their award by May 1st of each year.
  • The winner is strongly encouraged to attend the ISPS conference to accept the award.
Graduate Student Conference Scholarship

Five graduate student scholarships are offered for the ISPS Conference. The conference scholarship offers free of charge enrollment to the conference, all handouts, and catered meals. All graduate students who wish to be considered for the scholarship are required to submit a brief (1 page maximum) description of the student’s thesis research and a brief statement of the applicability of their thesis research to the research areas of the ISPS Division.

Procedure: Interested students need to submit a letter (e-mail) of intent and the brief document described above by March 31st of each year to the chair of the awards committee.

Note that there is a limit of two graduate students per academic advisor for the the Conference Scholarships.
